PILS Programs and Services
The Programs and Services of Putnam Independent
Living Services (PILS) provide information on and referral to services
available for individuals with varying disabilities and/or their families and
provide presentations to schools, businesses, and/or civic groups on disability
related issues.
Programs and Services are all provided Free of Charge to any
individual with a disability, or their family members, regardless of age, sex,
disability, ethnic or racial background or religious affiliation.
Information and
Referral
Assists both consumers and agencies research requests for
information and potential referral resources on a variety of topics, such as
Housing, Transportation, Barrier Removal, Assistive Technology, Americans with
Disabilities Act, disability-related services, organizations, etc.
Benefits and Entitlements
Services
Assists consumers understand what resources are available to them
and how to access these resources. PILS staff can also provide assistance in
completing applications, in developing a PASS Plan, and in preparing for
Hearings, Administrative Reviews and Appeals.
Community Outreach/
Education/Advocacy
Works with individuals, community organizations, and
state/national networks to 1)promote full inclusion of people with disabilities
into their communities, 2) heighten awareness and understanding of
disability-related issues and laws, including the Americans with Disabilities
Act, and 3) improve the implementation of existing laws - federal, state, and
local - that affect people with disabilities. Workshops and presentations are,
more often than not, provided by persons with disabilities. Call to arrange a
program tailored to specific needs.
Student Advocacy
Assists students with disabilities, ages 14 - 21, prepare for
life after school. Special attention is paid towards developing non-traditional
community resources and in establishing a team effort with the students,
schools, families, and government services.
Peer Advisement
Provides individual and group counseling, as well as peer support
groups. Peer Advisors with a variety of backgrounds are also available to visit
newly disabled individuals at hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and mental
health facilities to help facilitate transition back to the community.
