CHAIRMAN KENNETH JENKINS TO WALK IN SOLIDARITY WITH DISABILITY COMMUNITY TO COMMEMORATE THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ADA

White Plains - The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) will turn twenty this July 26, yet persons with disabilities still encounter steps, narrow doorways and inaccessible sidewalks when trying to access restaurants, businesses and other public venues. On July 26, 2010, Board of County Legislators Chairman Ken Jenkins will join prominent members of the disability community and their supporters to participate in a commemoration event: Twenty Years After the ADA…

Westchester Independent Living Center (WILC), a disability advocacy organization, will be sponsoring the event which will begin at 11:45 AM outside the Michaelian County Office Building. The intent of Twenty Years After is to educate the community and local officials about access challenges and issues in order to raise awareness and support for future collaboration in addressing these issues. Chairman Jenkins will walk with members of the disability community from the County Office Building to the WILC office at 200 Hamilton Avenue. During the walk, individuals from the disability community will be asked to comment about certain access barriers along the way: steps when attempting to access a nearby restaurant, curb cuts and a steep ramp.

“I’m extremely proud to join with WILC on the 20th anniversary of the passage of the ADA,” said Chairman Jenkins. “Every day, individuals with disabilities faced the indignities of not being able to enter public buildings or get on a public bus, and they were denied job and educational opportunities — until the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADA has revolutionized the way society thinks about individuals with disabilities, and it has transformed the way that people with disabilities live in communities.”

The Twenty Years After event will conclude at 12:45 at WILC, where Mr. Jenkins will be presented a certificate for his participation in the event.
